The U.S. government, Obama Administration, nominates Derek Mitchell, the state department special envoy to Myanmar, as the first U.S. ambassador to the country for 22 years, the Financial Times reported. Mitchell was formerly the principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs.
U.S government appointed the first envoy to Myanmar nearly a year ago, shortly before Mr Thein Sein took power after winning a national election in late 2010. It seems the Obama Administration quite satisfied with the role Mr. Mitchell played. The new Ambassador will play a key role in managing the process of engagement with the Myanmar government, which the Obama administration is encouraging to continue with political and economic reforms.
