Sai Kham Leak or Song Blossoms Cherryland

Sai Kham Leak is Famous Myanmar Folk Song Singer, Composer and Musician. The singer and composer is a Tai tribe, one tribe of Myanmar, Shan. Sai Kham Leak was born on 27 April 1949. He studied Medicine in 1967. Sai Kham Leak is not only Musician but also a physician and nationalist.

One of his song titled “Hai Mee Zai Huk Khur Ta Say” – meaning: “Be Patriotic Forever”, which I would remember forever.

The song has to do with uplifting the cultural heritage of the Tai, where it  urges to don Tai dress, speak Tai and treasure and garner everything that is culturally Tai. It says that if we somehow failed to protect or garner our language and culture, Tai nation would disappear with time. So be patriotic, love your motherland and nation has been the core of its message

The art of melody tuned into this song has been so forceful and arousing that young Tais singing this song during this period of time admitted to have been thrilled and even developed goose  or chill bumps effect, accompanied by soaring patriotism.

If I could recall it correctly, I, within the capacity of general secretary of Shan Literature and Culture Sub-Committee, Mandalay Arts and Science University, invited him to teach his self-composed Tai songs in Tai literature classes, which took place on weekends. I also remember, that his younger brother Sai Kham Tee was also sometime present to coach the

Tais university students with the singing. Another song popular among Tai intellectual of the time was “Kao Phun Hun Merng Neung”, which could be roughly translated as “The Land I Dream Of”. In his dream, the composer highlighted the scene of having to come across a written signboard at the entrance of his dreamland. It said: “If you like to enter all must come in altogether or don’t come at all”. This hypothetical or suppositional land he pointed out might be interpreted as “without unity and determination the desired goal will never be reached”.

During the ensuing years, he wrote numerous songs in Tai and as well in Burmese and secure an honourable place in Burma’s musical landscape as a composer. All in all, it was a great success and his songs travel far and wide across Shan State and all over Burma in no time.
